アーティスト:Axel Dallou(Bass / Vocals / Key)、Gary Royant(Guitar / Vocals / Keys)、Gregory Hoepffner(Drums / Vocals / Keys) インタビュアー・通訳:木下トモ

Q. How did you guys meet? Can you tell me in detail your story behind you forming the band?
Greg : We had a lot of previous bands, and we met through various friends that we played with. We used to play hardcore / metal, but we shared a love for pop music, so we took that opportunity !
Axel : I’ve been playing Music with Greg since we were 15.

―Kid North

Q. How did you come up with your bands name “Kid North”? Let me know if there is any significant meaning to the name?
Axel : We are huge fans of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, that’s why we also wanted to name our kid North.

Q. I heard that your aim is antinomic pop music such as dance & melancholy, simple & complex, aerial & throbbing. What made you want to play this kind of music?
Greg : It wasn’t a conscious decision for us. It was more a matter of “there’s all this amazing music that we enjoy, how can we make it closer to what we really want ?”. Adding another layer to what seems simple or logical is something we enjoy a lot. If you take a very upbeat song and tell a sad story over it, it means so much more than these 2 things taken separately. Everything isn’t just black or white in life, and I guess this is our way of expressing it.

Q. I heard that you used to be a five member band. Why three members now? By this, has it changed in any way?
Greg : It’s actually a simple situation : they didn’t want to continue making music with this band, and we did. We loved this music and loved playing together, so carry on was the most natural thing for us to do..

Q. Please tell me about the advantages and disadvantages of when you were a five member band, and the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a three member band.
Gary : When the two others left the band two years ago, we figured out that everything came to be easier at three. The less you are, the easier it is to satisfy everyone in the band. So we didn’t try to replace them. It’s that simple.
Greg : We didn’t try and we didn’t want to either. We found out there’s this unique chemistry between us, and we wanted to “protect” it. Also it allows us to be much more involved in everything. We don’t make any compromise anymore as a trio. Whereas as a 5 piece, we had to, because it was harder to make everyone happy.
Axel : Now we are not limited to our instruments anymore. I play bass, but I can play a synth melody or imagine a vocal line when we’re composing a song. Even if my voice will not be in the song for example. It’s very nice to work like this, because everyone is bringing ideas to the songs, and not just skills.

Q. I listened to your music and I felt that all of your harmonies were just amazing. Why this singing style, with the three of you singing, and how do you create each vocal part?
Gary : When we began writing songs as a trio, we had to chose who was doing what. We really thought that having a leader was obsolete in our era, and we really wanted to bring something new in all the ways that we could. So we decided that the three of us would be singing. It gives us lots of new possibilities in the writing process in terms of harmony, because we have three very different voices.
Greg : For instance, it allows to choose between 3 singers for each part. When you have only one singer, if the part doesn’t suit his/her voice, there’s no escape. With the 3 of us singing, there’s always a possibility.

Q. It’s seems that depending on the song, you change your keyboard player. Do you all play the keyboard? With all of you playing your own instruments, and on top of that, with each playing the keyboard as well, how do you manage? Are there any challenges in doing this?
Greg : There are basically challenges in everything that we do, as we are not incredibly skilled musicians haha. We all play the keyboard, because this is something we love doing in the studio. As a live band, we dispatch the keyboard parts between the 3 of us. Sometimes it’s impossible to perform everything as it was recorded, and we have to adapt. For instance, Axel will play live a part that Gary wrote, or Gary will play a guitar part that I wrote, I will perform a drum part that Axel programmed etc… In the end it doesn’t matter who wrote it first, as long as it’s good !

Q. I listened to the new song, “Rip Tide”. This song is definitely danceable and melancholic. Especially the music arrangement of teaser trailer from “New Waters” felt like listening to magnificent screen music. How did you create this song?
Greg : Thanks a lot ! We rearranged it a bit for the teaser. This song was one of the hardest to finish. It had many many different versions, miles away from the final track. We don’t have an actual method for composition, and this song is an example of us 3 bouncing on each other’s ideas. I remember that this track had a very uplifting intro, and a really emotional buildup. We wanted to keep that contrast, so we built the rest around that.

Q. What meaning and feeling are put into this song “Rip Tide”?
Greg : It’s quite a cathartic song. It’s about the urge of making something right, being the best you can, versus all the obstacles in your life. Sometimes what we try to do is almost absurd, considering all the difficulties standing in the way. Rip Tide is about that struggle, how something impossible can turn into something beautiful.

Q. I heard that you are in the making of your new album “New Waters”. What kind of album is this going to be, and please tell me your concept for this album?
Gary : Actually the album is finished and it’s going to be released in january 2016. We’ve been working on it for a year, and the result is something that we are really excited about. This is definitely a pop album, but we really tried to make it as an entirety and not just as a collection of shiny pop songs. This is something that we’ve worked a lot on and we can now consider that listening to New Waters will be a lot like riding a rollercoaster.
Greg : This is the pop album that we dreamed of making since we were teenagers.
Axel : Ah ah maybe not teenagers, because we used to reject things like the Hi-tone voices, the guitar solos and generally pop music. We were dumb. I think the teenage me would hate today’s me actually.

Q. In Japan, to target the overseas market, there are bands that sing in English and those that sing in Japanese. You sing in English. Why did you decide to sing in English, and were the lyrics written in English to start with?
Axel : We sing in english because it sounds better for the pop music we’re trying to do. I think french is a beautiful spoken language, but we can’t sing the same vocal lines using it. In french we pronounce almost every syllable, whereas in english you can under-pronounce and modulate the sounds. We write the lyrics together, but it usually starts with one of us. I personally can’t help writing in french at first, and it’s sometimes a problem.
Greg : There’s also a strong “connotation” when you sing in french, because of the french music culture. It deals a lot with poetry, play on words, sometimes politics… and we don’t want our music to be tainted that way. But as we grow older, we tend to accept it a bit more. There are few french words around the album, like the title “Cheval Sauvage” for example.

Q. In Japan, we consider the lyrics to be just as important as the music. There are many bands and listeners who seek messages or stories to be in the lyrics. How much emphasis do you put into this and your reason?
Greg : For us, the lyrics have to play a part for the song, and not the opposite. We always write the music first, then we’ll figure out what the music is making us think of. The words have to carry some “musicality”, so the biggest challenge for us is to find the right balance between groove and meaning.
Axel : This was the first time I wrote lyrics and I thought it was useless before… Now I’ve changed my mind because it’s a great challenge. We write lyrics together. One of us create a draft, the meaning, and the others help him finding the rhythm. For the drafts everyone has his own techniques. I personally start from bad Haikus I wrote in french, because I love the rhythm and the kind of neutral tone they have. It helps me describe ideas without being too much romantic or awkwardly epic.
Gary : When we write lyrics, we often feel like it’s the melody that describes the theme that we are going to choose for this song. It makes us think about a feeling or something that we’ve seen. And we write the core of the lyrics from this.

Q. Say that you came to Japan, is there any band that you would like to tour with, or is there any band in Japan that interest you?
Axel : I like Shugo Tokumaru but maybe it’s a little bit to far from our music. Otherwise, touring with Babymetal would be fun 🙂
Greg : We listened to Envy a lot when we started making music ! Mono also, they’re masters of melancholy. Axel and I loved Mad Capsule Markets also, they were so much fun. We used to know some of their songs by heart and try to sing them, even though we couldn’t understand japanese at all haha.
Touring in Japan is quite a fantasy for us, we’d be happy with any band.

Q. Please let me know which band you think is the coolest, if any.
Gary : Wow! That’s a very difficult question. We listen to a lot of different genres of music and choosing one band is almost impossible. Maybe it’s not the coolest band of all time, but I think we agree that Tame Impala has released the album of 2015!

1. Phoenix 『Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.』

2. Mew『No More Stories Are Told…』

3. Friendly Fires 『Pala』
Gary:

Q. Please name three albums that you consider are the roots of Kid North and your experiences with each album.
Greg : I would say :

1. Phoenix “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix”.
It’s a masterpiece in composition, production, and it was quite ahead of it’s time. We love how all the songs seem quite simple and catchy on the first spin, and then offer layers and layers of mysteries when you pay attention. That’s something we try to do too.

2. Mew “No More Stories Are Told…”.
Mew are the perfect example that sometimes you have to be “over the top” to make great songs. We all have our guilty pleasures when it comes to prog / 80’s rock, and Mew manage to incorporate that and still make great pop songs.

3. Friendly Fires “Pala”.
Crazy groove, incredible vocal lines, weird sounds, all of this combined into catchy songs. That’s all we love.
Gary : Good choice!

Q. Please let me know what your next goal is.
Gary : The next step will be the release of New Waters in january 2016. We are working a lot on it. And before that we’ll have a few shows in France.
Greg : We are currently working on new videos. Each new video is a bigger challenge, and the next ones should be no exception haha

Q. I know you want everyone to listen to your new song and album. Is there a specific group of listeners you’d like listening to your music?
Greg : Getting to people that don’t know the band already would be nice ! haha
We’re nice people, we basically love everyone.

Greg:

Q. Please give a message to our listeners, here in Japan!
Greg : See you soon !
That’s basically all I can remember of my Japanese lessons, sorry 🙁
